Indeed, you are right. Prayers may not be able to bring back the dead and things that have already been destroyed. And the rain might not stop no matter how much we wish for it to go away. Because on the first place, everything that comes down naturally has been brought about by God. But you are definitely wrong about your idea that a prayer will not solve anything. Because prayers are man's proof that they have faith in God.
We are very much aware that each and everyone of us shall perish and be one with the land. Have you ever thought that maybe this is just the natural way of declaring that our time is up? Have you ever thought of that? Face it or not. Soon in our lives, we shall return to Him and face whatever consequence we will have after the life we have lived. Prayers may not be able to bring back the dead, or put up that houses that have gone to waste, but prayers are able to uplift one's soul. Prayers give people something to look forward to. The most important thing during the time of need, is hope. Prayers exist in order to assure that people will not give up and their hopes of living a better life will remain. Don't think of God as a predictable being. He is the most intelligent and the most powerful above all. He knows what He is doing.
[I am not a full-fledged Christian, but I could not stand people who are stepping on others' belief. I am defending the Christian faith, because I for one also believe in something. And I do not want anyone to put a limit on my faith. Religion is something to respect. It is not something one should just blabber about.]
[I wrote this using my point of view if I were a Christian.]
